Woman in a Chemise (1906) is a blazing example of French Modernism at its most expressive. Painted during André Derain’s Fauvist period, this bold portrait encapsulates the raw, emotional charge of early 20th-century Parisian life. The subject, a dancer from the famed Montmartre nightclub Le Rat Mort – a setting also favoured by Toulouse-Lautrec – stares straight out from the canvas with relaxed defiance. Her pose is casual yet monumental. Her hands and proportions are distorted, but nothing feels accidental.

Derain painted Woman in a Chemise during a transformative summer in Collioure with Henri Matisse in 1905, where the two artists famously pushed colour beyond realism to evoke emotion and sensation. Derain, still early in his career, was the wilder of the two – technically brilliant and instinctively rebellious.
