Undressed in Florence: The First Homosexuals
Here's where it gets properly interesting. The reclining blond figure isn't a hired model. He's Hendrik Andersen, the painter's own younger brother, caught at 22 in a pose so languid, so odalisque, it borrows straight from centuries of reclining nude tradition, only here the subject is a man. Watching over him, seated at the edge of the bed and lacing up his boots, is the American painter John Briggs Potter, eight years his senior, dark-bearded and turned inward in posture.
That Andreas chose to paint his own brother this way, in a large-scale canvas destined for public view, tells us something rather bold about the world these three inhabited. There's no hesitation in it, no coyness. The tenderness between Hendrik and Potter simply is, rendered with the same matter-of-fact confidence a painter might bring to a still life of fruit on a table. 🖼️
Both siblings went on to lead lives worthy of their own biopics. Andreas, born like Hendrik in Norway, built a career as a painter before his early death in 1902. Hendrik, meanwhile, decamped to Rome and traded canvas for marble, devoting decades to colossal male nude sculptures for an imagined "World City", a utopian metropolis of art and peace that, rather magnificently, never got beyond the drawing board. It remains one of art history's great unbuilt follies.
The original hangs in the Kunstmuseum Basel as part of The First Homosexuals: The Birth of New Identities 1869–1939, an exhibition examining queer communities, intimate portraiture and coded desire across turn-of-the-century art, running until 2 August 2026. It's a rare chance to see a genuinely candid piece of LGBTQ+ art history displayed with the scholarly seriousness it deserves, and it's exactly the kind of rediscovered masterpiece that belongs in serious art print collections.
