While Demuth achieved mainstream international acclaim as a central figure in American Modernism and Precisionism—renowned for his iconic architectural studies and I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold—he simultaneously cultivated a daring, highly private portfolio of watercolor studies. Created during the summer of 1930 while Demuth was residing in the coastal bohemian haven of Provincetown, Massachusetts, this captivating composition offers an intimate glimpse into the artist’s secret world.

At first glance, the title implies a fleeting moment of ordinary public relief outside a bustling café. Yet, upon closer inspection, Demuth reveals a profound portrayal of male intimacy and homoerotic desire. In early modernist subculture, sailors on shore leave were celebrated symbols of hyper-masculinity and freedom. Demuth places the figures centrally, using light and shadow to create a scene of quiet, secular reverence and bold sexual liberation.

Noticeably, the right-hand margin features a delicate, unfinished graphite sketch of surrounding onlookers and café patrons—a stark, poetic contrast between the vibrant, secret romance of the foreground and the oblivious outside world. Suffering from severe health complications later in life, Demuth poured his creative energy into these intensely personal watercolors, crafting works that were never exhibited during his lifetime and were meant strictly for his innermost circle. Today, the original piece resides in the permanent collection of the prestigious Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
