A Masterclass in Abstraction 🏔️
Christian Rohlfs was a true pioneer of Modernism, a man who famously declared in 1911, "I do not paint according to nature." His work, The Blue Mountain, is a breathtaking example of this philosophy. In this piece, the traditional mountain landscape dissolves into a rhythmic dance of wedge-shaped colours and dynamic upward movements. It is less a literal peak and more a monumental feeling of form breaking down into pure, vibrant energy.
Rohlfs spent time in Munich between 1910 and 1912, where he moved in the same radical circles as the Der Blaue Reitergroup. This influence is clear in his rejection of three-dimensional representation in favour of flat planes of pure, unapologetic colour.
The history behind this artwork adds a layer of profound depth to any interior. Despite his genius, Rohlfs was targeted by the Nazi regime in 1937. His work was branded as "degenerate," and he was expelled from the Prussian Academy of Arts. Over five hundred of his works were seized from public collections. Owning a piece of his legacy today is not just a style choice; it is a celebration of artistic resilience and the enduring power of the avant-garde.
