A Body Built from Colour 🧡
Look closely and the figure appears assembled rather than painted: individual, almost crystalline planes of orange, coral and red, fitted together like stained glass. Apart from the head and one hand, the sitter is swathed entirely in fabric, so the body becomes a coiled, glowing shape. Flecks of blue and green weave through the warmth, yet the colour still reads as dense and compact, which only heightens the tension.
Then there is that single, unflinching eye. Neither the palette nor the composition can rival its expressiveness. The sitter fixes her gaze on the artist and, through him, on us. It is a piercing, modern stare that feels startlingly current more than a century on. 🔥
Interesting Facts About the Artist and the Painting 🎨
- A family portrait. The model is Schiele’s own sister, Gertrude (known as Gerti), who sat for him many times. Her legs and feet seem wedged into the picture plane, giving the pose its cramped, restless energy.
- That mysterious line. A single pencil line arcs from the hem of the skirt up to the raised hand, added for no apparent motivic reason. It pulls the whole composition taut, like a drawn bowstring. 🏹
- A scandalous reputation. Schiele’s work shocked conservative Vienna and led to his brief arrest in 1912 on obscenity charges.
- A tragically short life. He died at just 28 in the 1918 flu pandemic, days after his pregnant wife. His output in under a decade remains staggering.
- An orange obsession. Schiele adored the colour, and it is easy to see why this blazing work became one of his most recognisable.
