A Divine Union: The Timeless Queer Art of Elisàr von Kupffer 🖼️

Together with his partner, Eduard von Mayer, Von Kupffer founded a religion called Klarism (or Clarism), which sought to reconcile their queer identity with their spiritual beliefs. They envisioned a "Clear World" where beings existed beyond conventional gender and sexual divisions, living in a state of eternal beauty worship and love. This utopian vision is beautifully realised in “The New Union,” where the figures are captured in a ritualistic, almost angelic, pose. Interestingly, Von Kupffer often used his own body as the model for these androgynous figures, sometimes even "pulling ropes around his chest to give himself breasts and emphasising his large buttocks and wide hips," as described by art historian Jonathan Katz.
