The Avant-Garde Edge 🖼️

Émile Bernard was never one to follow the crowd. By the mid-1880s, he had grown restless with the fleeting, blurry nature of Impressionism. Seeking something more structured and expressive, he pioneered a style known as Cloisonnism.

Taking inspiration from ancient enamel-work and Japanese prints, Bernard utilised bold, simplified designs and heavy dark outlines to "compartmentalise" colour. It was a radical departure from the norm. By the summer of 1888, while working alongside Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven, Bernard helped birth a revolutionary concept: painting from memory.

Instead of standing on a beach trying to replicate every ripple of water, Bernard painted the idea of the cliffs. He filtered the landscape through his mind, resulting in the dreamlike, rhythmic pinks and deep blues seen in The Cliffs of Yport. This approach laid the essential groundwork for the Synthetism and Symbolism movements that would change art forever.
