Into the Wild: How Kirchner's Bathers at Moritzburg Rewrote the Rules of Nude Painting 🎨
Between 1909 and 1911, Kirchner and his fellow radicals from Die Brücke (The Bridge) decamped each summer to the Moritzburg Lakes near Dresden, trading the studio for the shoreline. There, away from bourgeois convention, they painted friends and lovers swimming, lounging and sunbathing in various states of undress, chasing a raw, unmediated relationship with the body and the natural world. It was less a painting excursion than a manifesto in practice: art as liberation, colour as rebellion. 🌊
The bathing motif itself was nothing new. It had threaded its way through European painting for centuries, reaching a particular crescendo during Impressionism, and art historians have long noted the visible debt this composition owes to Cézanne's own bather paintings, that same interest in figures arranged like architecture within a landscape. But where Cézanne sought structure, Kirchner sought sensation.
What set Kirchner apart, and what still gives this painting its charge, is his decision to depict both men and women bathing together, unposed and unidealised. This was a notable departure from convention; the innocent, allegorical nude of academic painting is entirely absent here. In its place is something closer to documentary, a snapshot of the "cult of nature" movement gathering pace in Germany at the time, all communal living, sun worship and a rejection of industrial modernity.
