Born in Lausanne in 1865 and later naturalised French, Vallotton trained at the Académie Julian in Paris and fell in with Les Nabis, the loose band of Post-Impressionist rebels that also counted Bonnard and Vuillard among its ranks 🖼️. He made his name first as a printmaker: his stark, high-contrast woodcuts, all bold black and white with barely a line of shading, brought him international acclaim before he'd turned thirty. His Intimités series, ten prints exploring the tension and secrecy of domestic relationships, remains a landmark in the history of the medium.

By the time he painted Sleeping Woman, Vallotton had shifted his focus back to oil, developing the flattened, deliberate style that would come to define his later career. He also wrote: his novel La Vie meurtrière (The Murderous Life) was published only after his death in 1925, a fittingly enigmatic coda for an artist who spent his life observing others without ever quite revealing himself.

Vallotton's precision unsettled people. One reviewer, writing for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung in March 1910, memorably grumbled that the painter worked less like an artist than a policeman rounding up forms and colours, and complained that the whole effect was dry and joyless. It's the kind of criticism that, with a century of hindsight, reads as an accidental compliment. That exacting, unsentimental eye is precisely what makes Vallotton's work feel so startlingly modern.

Art historians now regard his cool detachment as a forerunner of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), the unsparing realist movement that would flourish in Germany in the 1920s, and see a clear kinship with the quiet, light-filled interiors of Edward Hopper 🌇. Vallotton wasn't chasing joyfulness. He was chasing truth, and Sleeping Woman is truth at its most tender.
