Meet the Master of the American Seascape 🌊
Born in New Jersey, Frederick Judd Waugh was classically trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before travelling to Paris to continue his studies at the celebrated Académie Julian. His artistic education combined rigorous academic training with the influence of European painting, helping shape the confident technique that would later define his marine art.
Waugh’s fascination with the ocean was more than theoretical. Early in his career, he worked as a marine painter on Sark, the small island off the coast of Normandy. His time surrounded by the sea gave him an intimate understanding of waves, weather, light and atmosphere.
After returning to the United States in 1908, Waugh spent periods living and working in Bailey Island, Maine and Provincetown, Massachusetts. Both locations offered abundant inspiration for an artist captivated by the changing moods of the Atlantic.
It was here that Waugh became widely recognised for his powerful and atmospheric seascapes, developing a distinctive visual language in which water becomes the undisputed protagonist.
