Gela Seksztajn was born into a working-class Jewish family in Warsaw, Poland, at the turn of the twentieth century. Her path to becoming a painter was never easy. Formal artistic training, the preserve of the privileged, was largely closed to her. Yet her determination was absolute. As Józef Sandel, a post-war curator at the Jewish Historical Institute, wrote of her with quiet reverence: "To paint was her only desire."

Seksztajn found her way, studying with dedication and developing a style that married classical figurative tradition with an intimate, almost lyrical looseness. Her brushwork is never laboured; it breathes. Her palette glows. She became known above all for her portraits of children — studies of extraordinary psychological sensitivity that capture not just likeness, but inner life.
