Autumn Framed in Flame 🍁

Look at how the composition begins. A great forked trunk rises on either side of the frame, creating a natural window onto the landscape beyond. Through it, a scarlet cluster of maple leaves hangs in the centre foreground, with a shrine, a bridge, glinting water and a distant blush of horizon waiting behind. It is a bold piece of visual staging, and one that feels startlingly modern. Think of it as the nineteenth-century answer to a perfectly cropped photograph. 📸

Hiroshige, one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e tradition, was celebrated for sweeping landscape prints and a rare sensitivity to the changing seasons. Here he is at his most theatrical, pulling the viewer’s eye from the vivid foreground to the tranquil distance in a single, graceful sweep.

The story behind the scene is quietly poetic. In earlier times, Mama, which lay more than ten miles east of central Edo (now Tokyo), was famous for a single tree of extraordinary size. By Hiroshige’s day, only its stump remained. Yet he may be gesturing toward that legendary tree through the large, forked trunk that frames the view. It is a tribute to something lost, painted into the very structure of the picture.

Then there are the leaves. Those dominant maples were once a glorious orange, achieved with red lead or iron oxide, though the pigment has since darkened with age. What we see today is a deeper, smouldering red, a reminder that even the colours in a masterpiece have a life of their own. 🧡
