Harmonizing captures four Black men gathered on a street corner, mid-song, mid-moment, mid-life. One of the figures is believed to be Pippin's own stepson, which lends the scene an intimacy that no amount of technical skill alone could manufacture. Behind them, a painted timber fence, a glowing street lamp, and the modest architecture of a West Chester neighbourhood ground the image in a specific, lived reality.

What strikes you immediately is the colour. Pippin's palette is bold without being brash: the acid yellow of a knitted jumper, the graphic blue-and-white stripe of an open-collared shirt, the cool grey of weathered wood. These are not the colours of a man painting from imagination. They are the colours of a man painting from memory, from love, from community.

Born in 1888 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Pippin was entirely self-taught, a fact that makes his technical brilliance all the more astonishing. He enlisted during the First World War, serving with the 369th Infantry Regiment, famously known as the Harlem Hellfighters 🪖, and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre for his bravery. A German sniper's bullet left his right arm severely damaged, making the very act of painting a profound act of physical perseverance. He would later use his left hand to guide his right, burning designs into wood panels before graduating to oils.
