Here is an art history fact that never fails to delight: Anna McNeill Whistler was never supposed to sit for this portrait at all. In 1871, her son James had arranged for another model to pose in his Chelsea studio. When that model failed to appear, Anna, then visiting from America, stepped in as a last-minute substitute. The result? One of the most recognised works of fine art in the entire Western canon.

That charming origin story feels fitting for a painting so composed, so deliberately still. Whistler, ever the perfectionist, is said to have made his elderly mother stand for the initial sketches before she insisted, quite reasonably, on sitting down. The chair remained. So did history.

Described by critics as both an American icon and a Victorian Mona Lisa, Whistler's Mother occupies a singular position in the world of iconic artwork. It is, remarkably, one of the most celebrated paintings by an American artist to have never resided permanently on American soil. The original hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, which acquired it in 1891 for the Musée du Luxembourg, making it the first American painting purchased by the French state.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834 to 1903) was, by any measure, one of the most fascinating figures in 19th-century art. Born in Massachusetts but shaped by Russia (where his father built railways for the Tsar) and later by Paris and London, he was a true cosmopolitan, equally at home in the studios of Gustave Courbet as he was trading barbed witticisms with Oscar Wilde in the drawing rooms of Chelsea.
