An Unlikely Friendship, Immortalised in Oil
The story behind this portrait is as compelling as the brushwork itself. John Peter Russell, an Australian painter working in Paris, struck up a close friendship with Van Gogh in the mid-1880s, a relationship built on mutual respect between two artists still finding their voices. In 1886, Russell painted his friend with a realism and classical restraint that stands apart from the swirling, expressive style Van Gogh would later become famous for.
Fascinatingly, conservators studying the painting discovered something rather touching hidden beneath the surface: the canvas was originally brighter, and above Van Gogh's head, painted in red, are the words "Vincent, in friendship." 💌 It's a detail that transforms the portrait from a simple likeness into a genuine gesture of camaraderie, one preserved in oil for well over a century.
The Most Faithful Likeness of Van Gogh Ever Painted?
Here's where things get genuinely fascinating for any serious art lover. Archibald Standish Hartrick, a fellow artist who knew Van Gogh personally, declared this portrait the most accurate likeness of him in existence, more true to life, he claimed, than any of Van Gogh's own self-portraits. That's a remarkable statement given how instantly recognisable Van Gogh's self-portraits remain today.
Van Gogh agreed. He treasured this painting deeply. Years later, writing to his brother Theo from the psychiatric institution at Saint-Rémy, a period of profound personal struggle, Van Gogh specifically asked that his portrait by Russell be looked after with care. It speaks volumes that amid everything he was going through, this particular painting remained a source of comfort and connection.
