A Victorian Vision of the Deep 🌊🎨
Painted at the height of Waterhouse's powers and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1901, A Mermaid is one of the most compelling works in the British figurative tradition. The painting depicts a flame-haired siren perched on sea-washed rocks, combing her long auburn tresses against a backdrop of dramatic coastal cliffs. At her side rests an abalone shell brimming with pearls, objects steeped in a mythology far darker than their lustrous beauty might suggest. According to legend, those pearls were formed from the tears of sailors whom the mermaid herself had lured to their deaths. 💀🐚
It is thought that Waterhouse drew inspiration from Alfred Lord Tennyson's 1830 poem The Mermaid, with its haunting refrain of a solitary figure singing and combing her hair alone beneath the waves. Yet Waterhouse's vision is more psychologically complex than Tennyson's romantic lyric. This mermaid is no joyful creature of the deep. She is melancholy, isolated, caught between two worlds. There are no sailors in the composition, no victims, no conquest. Only loneliness. The siren has become the sufferer.
