Migishi painted The Sea and Sunshine at the age of 31 — the final year of his life. Born in 1903 in Hokkaido, he threw himself into art with a ferocity that seemed to know no other speed. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant pioneers of Western-style oil painting in Japan, a movement known as yōga. Largely self-taught in his early years, he eventually studied under the celebrated Ryūshi Kawabata before absorbing European influences — particularly French post-impressionism — on his travels.
