Born in Bordeaux in 1840, Odilon Redon spent the first half of his career in near total darkness, quite literally. His early works, known as the Noirs, were brooding charcoal and lithograph studies of dream logic and nightmare, populated by floating eyeballs, spidery creatures and melancholic figures that would later be claimed as forerunners of Surrealism. It was only in the 1890s, past the age of fifty, that Redon underwent his now-legendary chromatic awakening, abandoning black and white for the jewel-toned pastels and oils for which he is now best loved. The Sacred Heart (The Buddha) belongs to this luminous second act, painted with the glowing oranges, mossy greens and midnight blues that became his signature palette.

Redon was fascinated by the idea that art might do what religion so often fails to: unite rather than divide. In this piece, he merges the bowed, veiled head of a Madonna-like figure with the radiant chest of the Buddha, whose heart blazes outward in threads of crimson and gold. The work draws direct inspiration from Édouard Schuré's 1889 book The Great Initiates: A Study of the Secret History of Religions, in which the French philosopher argued that the world's great spiritual traditions share a common thread: that the soul endures, that mind outlasts matter, and that every human is capable of profound spiritual growth. Redon, for his part, was quick to clarify that he was no mystic himself; he simply believed art had a duty to search for meaning that doctrine alone could not supply.
