It was left unfinished on his easel. It was inspired by jazz clubs and neon-lit Manhattan streets. It is, arguably, the most joyful and complex abstract painting ever made. 🎨

In 1940, aged 68, Mondrian fled London during the Blitz and arrived in New York City. What he found there was nothing short of a revelation. The syncopated rhythms of boogie-woogie jazz, the neon pulse of Broadway, the relentless grid of Manhattan's streets: all of it dismantled thirty years of rigid, meditative European abstraction and replaced it with something entirely new.

The result was a diamond-shaped canvas (hung at a 45-degree angle, no less) in which the heavy black lines of his classical De Stijl works are abolished entirely, replaced by shimmering mosaic bands of red, yellow, blue, white and grey. Your eye cannot settle. It hops, skips, and skitters across the surface, mimicking the off-beat staccato of a jazz piano. This is wall art that moves. 🎹
