A close friend of Santiago Rusiñol and a regular at the legendary bohemian gathering place Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona (the very café where a young Pablo Picasso also found his footing), Casas was a pivotal force in dragging Spanish painting out of stuffy Academicism and into the light of modernity. He was also a celebrated portraitist and poster artist, his graphic work rivalling the great Toulouse-Lautrec in its elegance and wit.

Nu amb guitarra (Nude with Guitar) is dated 1894 and belongs to a trio of remarkable oil paintings depicting female nudes in the collection of the Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges, one of Spain's most extraordinary cultural treasures. The three works, including Nu femení d'escorç (Foreshortened Female Nude) and Nu femení (Female Nude), are believed to date from the same period, though only this first bears a date.
