Harunobu (1725–1770) was a pioneer of full-colour woodblock printing and one of the first artists to elevate shunga — erotic art — into refined narrative and artistic expression. His work blurred the line between sensuality and spirituality, offering viewers both pleasure and insight. Two Lovers is a beautiful example of his mature style, where delicate lines and poetic symbolism merge into a visually arresting tableau.

This print is widely interpreted as a depiction of romantic and erotic love between two women — a subject that remains startlingly modern. In a time when LGBTQ+ relationships were often concealed, Japanese shunga art gave space for diverse expressions of love and desire. Harunobu’s portrayal is not voyeuristic or caricatured. Instead, it honours a shared moment of affection and agency between women, capturing the emotional resonance of same-sex love with warmth and subtlety.
