"I often think that the night is more alive and more richly coloured than the day." 🎨
Van Gogh's obsession with painting the night sky is a fascinating story in itself. From the moment he arrived in Arles in 1888, he was consumed by the idea of capturing "night effects". He confided in his brother Theo and fellow artist Emile Bernard about his longing to paint a starry sky. This particular painting, realised in September of that year, was a culmination of that desire. It’s a work of remarkable serenity, a tranquil contrast to the more turbulent Starry Night he would paint months later while confined to a mental institution. That later piece, with its swirling, cosmic vision, showcases his troubled psyche, but the Rhône version is more peaceful and grounded, reinforced by the presence of a couple of lovers enjoying the night air.
