The Reclaimed Masterpiece 🖼️

Originally painted around 1879, this striking masterpiece recently captured global attention when it was sold at Bukowskis in Stockholm for an incredible 760,000 kronor ($82,200), over seven times its initial estimate. Now safely housed in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), this phenomenal painting is available to art lovers and designers alike as an ultra-high-quality gallery print.

Born in French Guyana, Pierre Louis Alexandre (1844–1905) is celebrated as one of the most frequently depicted Black models in pre-20th-century European art. Having braved a transatlantic crossing, likely stowing away on an American cargo ship, Alexandre arrived in Stockholm in 1863. By day, he worked grueling hours at the city’s bustling docks; by winter, he found secondary employment as a life model at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.

It was during one of these academy sessions that the young, fiercely talented Swedish artist Alma Holsteinson captured his likeness. Coming from a mining family herself, Holsteinson understood the physical toll of manual labour, an empathy that shines through in her beautifully dignified, deeply respectful portrayal.

In a charming twist of art history, Alexandre was painted by a circle of students that day. Sitting directly to Holsteinson’s left was her fellow classmate Karin Bergöö Larsson (who would later marry the famous painter Carl Larsson). Bergöö Larsson’s portrait of Alexandre, captured from a slightly different angle but featuring the exact same relaxed pose, yellow sash, and red-striped shorts, was proudly acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, in 2024.
