Few artists embody the romantic tragedy of creative genius quite like Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920). Born in Livorno, Italy, into a Sephardic Jewish family of intellectuals, he arrived in Paris in 1906 and threw himself headlong into the intoxicating chaos of Montparnasse, rubbing shoulders with Picasso, Brancusi, and Diego Rivera. His life was, by all accounts, a beautiful catastrophe: a relentless pursuit of recognition that eluded him almost entirely during his lifetime, compounded by a self-destructive devotion to alcohol and substances that would claim his life at just 35. 💔

And yet. Despite all of that turbulence, what he left on canvas was serenity itself.

Girl with Pigtails was painted around 1918, believed to be approximately a year before his death, during a period when Modigliani retreated to the South of France to escape the horrors of World War I engulfing Paris. It was here, in the relative quiet of the Côte d'Azur, that something shifted in his work. He had recently become a father, his partner the fellow artist Jeanne Hébuterne having given birth to their daughter, and the tenderness of new parenthood seemed to pour directly onto his canvases. He painted children with a frequency and devotion rarely seen in his earlier work, and this portrait is widely regarded as one of the most significant of that series. 👶
