The painting itself, housed in the Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo, Italy, is a work of subtle genius. Painted around 1476, it showcases Mary in a moment of surprise, interrupted from her reading by the unseen Angel of the Annunciation. This simple yet powerful composition is a hallmark of Antonello da Messina’s innovative style. He was a pioneer in Italy, introducing the oil on panel technique which he learned from Northern European artists like Petrus Christus. This method allowed him to create the finely detailed works for which he is renowned.

Antonello da Messina presents Mary not in elaborate brocades but in a simple woollen garment, anticipating the aesthetic of the High Renaissance. She is shown in a three-quarter-length pose, a typical feature of the artist’s individual portraits.
