A painting that does not merely depict despair, but inhabits it. 🖼️

Sappho of Lesbos, born around 630 BC, was one of antiquity's greatest poets, her lyric verse so revered that Plato is said to have called her the tenth Muse. Yet it is not her poetry that gave rise to one of the 19th century's most captivating paintings, but rather the legend of her death: spurned, it was said, by the handsome ferryman Phaon, she allegedly cast herself from the Leucadian cliffs into the Ionian Sea. Whether myth or tragic fact, this final scene transfixed the Romantic imagination, and Mengin seized upon it with extraordinary psychological precision.

When Sappho was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1877, it caused an immediate sensation. Here was not the simpering, decorative femininity so common in academic painting of the era, but a woman of genuine anguish and immense inner life. The figure stands on raw, unforgiving rock. Behind her, iron-grey storm clouds mass above a restless sea. Two solitary birds wheel in the distance. She holds her lyre with the limp, distracted grip of someone who has played their final chord. 🎶

A monumental oil on canvas, measuring an imposing 230 x 151 centimetres in its original form at Manchester Art Gallery, it captures the ancient Greek lyric poet at her most desolate: barefoot on a storm-dark clifftop, lyre in hand, gazing downward with the faraway expression of a woman who has already decided. 🌊
