Charles Henry Buckius Demuth (1883–1935) was a Pennsylvania-born painter with a nickname, "Deem", given to him by his closest friends, and a body of work that quietly reshaped American art. Trained at Drexel and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Demuth is best remembered today as a founder of Precisionism, the crisp, industrial style he turned to later in his career. But it was watercolour, loose, atmospheric, and endlessly expressive, that he loved first and mastered most completely.
Two facts about Demuth's own life add extraordinary poignancy to his work. He lived with diabetes for most of his adult years and was among the very first patients in the United States to receive insulin treatment, a discovery that quite literally extended his career by over a decade. He also maintained a long, devoted romantic relationship with designer Robert Locher, a quiet partnership that ran alongside the private, coded intimacy so visible in paintings like this one. 🕊️
Created around 1917, Dancing Sailors captures three couples moving across a dance floor rendered in soft, overlapping planes of watercolour, a technique that blurs the line between figure and setting and lends the whole scene a hazy, candlelit intimacy. Two sailors dance together at the composition's heart, while other couples partner with women nearby. Nothing here is explicit. Everything here is suggestive, and that restraint is exactly the point.
