When Paris burned with creativity, one man set the stage alight. 🎭
To truly appreciate this print, you must first understand the almost mythological figure who made it. Christian Bérard (1902–1949) was known to every artist, couturier, and intellectual in Paris simply as "Bébé." The nickname was affectionate, but there was nothing small about his influence. He moved through the most rarefied circles of the 20th century's cultural imagination with the ease of a man who seemed to have invented glamour himself. Coco Chanel adored him. Elsa Schiaparelli sought his eye. Jean Cocteau was, in many ways, his creative soulmate.
It was Bérard who designed the production and costumes for Cocteau's endlessly imitated 1946 masterpiece La Belle et la Bête, arguably the most beautiful film ever made. If you have ever stopped dead in front of a candlelit corridor of enchanted candelabras held by living arms, you were, in that moment, standing inside Christian Bérard's imagination.
He was a Neo-Romantic in an age of Cubist austerity and Surrealist shock. Where his contemporaries fractured the world into geometry or reached for the deliberately grotesque, Bérard painted feeling. Soft. Melancholy. Radiant. His draftsmanship was fluid and rapid, his atmospheres dreamlike and precise all at once.
Look closely at this fine art print and you are looking into the soul of a man who understood theatre better than almost anyone alive. The composition is framed by a grand pale archway adorned with theatrical masks, their grey faces hovering like benevolent spirits. Below the proscenium, deep crimson brushstrokes billow in the unmistakable scallop of a velvet curtain. Bérard pulls you through the frame as though you have just taken your seat in the stalls.
