From this vantage point, he commanded sweeping vistas of Stockholm's islands and waterways, transforming them into what would become his signature "blue period" works.

What makes Jansson truly extraordinary is his synesthetic approach to painting. Friends and contemporaries noted that his luminous blue tones seemed to echo the way he played piano, with several nocturnal cityscapes titled Nocturnes in tribute to his beloved Chopin. This fusion of visual and musical artistry created wall art that doesn't just hang on walls but sings from them.

When Jansson first exhibited his large-format blue paintings (some measuring up to two metres across), critics and the public greeted them with scepticism. These avant-garde compositions challenged conventional artistic sensibilities with their bold use of a single dominant colour and strikingly personal expressionism. His breakthrough came in 1898 when wealthy collector Ernest Thiel became his patron, providing the financial stability that allowed Jansson to continue his innovative work. By 1904, he completed his final "blue" painting of old Stockholm, closing a chapter that would cement his legacy as one of Sweden's most original painters.
