A Pioneering Woman Artist 🎨

Evelyn de Morgan (1855–1919) was a true trailblazer in the male-dominated Victorian art world. Born Evelyn Pickering into a privileged family, she showed remarkable artistic talent from childhood. Against her family's wishes, she pursued formal training at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she won the prestigious Slade Scholarship.

Her marriage to ceramicist William de Morgan proved a creative partnership of equals. She worked prolifically throughout her life, creating paintings that foregrounded the female experience through spiritual, mythological, and allegorical themes. Associated with the later Pre-Raphaelite movement, she also embraced Aestheticism and Symbolism, developing a distinctive style that feels remarkably contemporary today.

De Morgan's masterwork depicts two figures from Greek mythology representing the Morning Star and Evening Star. Phosphorus rises triumphantly, torch held high to herald the coming dawn, whilst Hesperus slumps into shadow, his extinguished torch pointing downward as sleep beckons. Set against a tranquil shoreline scattered with seashells (traditional symbols of fertility and feminine power), this allegorical piece speaks to the eternal cycle of day and night, waking and sleeping, life and death.
