The Art of Deceit 🎨

Born in Lausanne in 1865, Vallotton moved to Paris as a teenager to study at the Académie Julian, eventually falling in with Les Nabis, that loose brotherhood of Post-Impressionist rebels that included Bonnard and Vuillard. He's widely credited with reviving the woodcut as a serious modern medium, working in the kind of stark, graphic black and white that would go on to influence everything from German Expressionism to modern illustration. Vallotton wasn't just a painter either. He was an art critic, a novelist, and by all accounts a man with a rather forensic eye for the hypocrisies of the Parisian bourgeoisie he moved amongst. 

The Lie wasn't a standalone idea. It grew out of Intimités, a series of ten woodcuts Vallotton produced around 1897 to 1898, each one a small, devastating study of romantic betrayal, marital boredom, and the quiet cruelties couples inflict on one another behind closed doors. He liked the composition enough to return to it in oil, and the painted version now lives in the Cone Collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art, having been amassed by the formidable sisters Claribel and Etta Cone, two of the twentieth century's great, unsung tastemakers.

A man and woman are wrapped around one another on a sofa, her red dress the single hot note against a room otherwise drowned in mustard-striped wallpaper and claret velvet. She's whispering something into his ear. He has his eyes closed. And that title does rather a lot of heavy lifting. 🔥

Who's lying to whom? It's tempting to assume she's the deceiver, caught mid-confession or mid-fabrication, her mouth pressed close to his ear. But look again at him. He's not really listening, is he? His gaze has drifted somewhere else entirely, which makes you wonder whether he's the one harbouring the secret while she murmurs something entirely sincere. Is one of them unfaithful? Is there a pregnancy in the mix, a paternity in question? Vallotton never tells us, and that ambiguity is exactly the point. This is a man who spent his career picking apart the polite fictions of respectable society, one raised eyebrow at a time.
