A Modernist Master with a Working-Class Heart 🎨

Fernand Léger (1881-1955) wasn't your typical early 20th-century artist. Whilst his contemporaries were busy fragmenting reality into Cubist planes, Léger developed what he called a "machine aesthetic", a visual language inspired by his experiences as a stretcher-bearer during World War I. Surrounded by soldiers and the gleaming metal of military equipment, he found beauty in the mechanical world and, more importantly, in the everyday people who operated it.

Completed in 1954, just one year before his death, The Great Parade represents the culmination of Léger's artistic journey. This monumental work took over a hundred preparatory studies, beginning in 1947, and showcases everything the artist had learned about colour, form, and the human spirit.

The composition bursts with life: acrobats tumble across a vivid blue band, clowns gesture theatrically, and stylised figures in bold primary colours create a rhythmic procession that captures the energy of the circus. The large red "C" for cirque anchors the composition, whilst rope motifs weave through the scene like visual threads connecting the performers.
