By day, he was a celebrated society portraitist, co-founder of the National Portrait Society, and full Academician of the Royal Academy, painting aristocrats, royals, and church figures with Edwardian elegance. By night and in private, he was a bold modernist experimenting with form, colour, and deeply personal subject matter.

Created during the transformative 1930s, this masterpiece transcends the typical constraints of its era. Against a luminous rose-pink background that seems to glow with warmth and affection, Henry Thomas emerges not as an anonymous subject, but as a fully realised individual whose dignity and humanity command the viewer's attention. The painting's original title, "Head of a Negro", has been rightfully revised to honour Thomas as the complex person he was—a change that reflects our evolving understanding of representation and respect in art.

Henry Thomas, having missed his voyage back to Jamaica, encountered Philpot's godson Robert Allerton Parker at The National Gallery in London.
