When a work long overlooked, misattributed or simply forgotten re-emerges and forces us to look anew at an artist we thought we knew entirely. The recent rediscovery of Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Prince William Nii Nortey Dowuona is precisely such a moment, and it is, without question, one of the most significant revelations in European fine art in decades.
Painted around 1896, the year Klimt co-founded the revolutionary Vienna Secession movement, this extraordinary work depicts a young African prince in near-photorealistic detail. Prince William Nii Nortey Dowuona was among a group of men and women from the Gold Coast, present-day Ghana, who were brought to Vienna as part of one of the deeply troubling colonial "human zoo" exhibitions that were, shamefully, commonplace across Europe at the time. In the summer of 1896, they appeared in a simulated African village at Vienna's Zoological Garden. It is there, art historians now believe, that Klimt encountered the prince and was moved to paint him.
