Gilded and Eternal: The Power of the Golden Epoch 🖼️

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the founding president of the Vienna Secession, a breakaway group of artists who rejected the conservative art establishment of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in favour of something bolder, more decorative, and altogether more sensual. Their motto, roughly translated, declared "to every age its art, to art its freedom", and Klimt spent his career living up to it.

Around 1903, Klimt travelled to Ravenna, Italy, where he encountered the dazzling Byzantine mosaics inside the Basilica of San Vitale. The experience left a permanent mark. Klimt returned to Vienna and began layering genuine gold, silver, and platinum leaf directly over his oil paintings, launching what is now known as his celebrated Golden Phase, of which The Kiss remains the crowning achievement.

The Kiss is painted in oil and gold leaf on a perfectly square canvas measuring 180 × 180 cm, and every inch of that gilded surface earns its place. The two lovers stand fused inside a single radiant cloak, their forms distinguished not through anatomy but through pattern: the man's robe is composed of sharp, angular rectangles in black, white, and grey, while the woman's gown dissolves into soft circles and colourful floral spirals. Masculine and feminine are rendered here as pure decorative language, held together in one shimmering field of gold.

Look closely and the setting reveals a quiet, unsettling detail. The couple kneel not on solid ground but at the very edge of a flower-strewn cliff, her toes curling over the precipice. That golden glow feels protective and eternal, yet the drop beneath introduces a current of fragility and risk beneath all that radiance.

A Print Worthy of the Masterpiece 🎨

Few paintings put a printing process through its paces quite like The Kiss, and that is exactly why ART SNOB relies on giclée fine art printing with 12-colour technology. It is what allows the true warmth and depth of Klimt's gold, silver, and platinum leaf to come through, rather than flattening into the dull uniform shine that standard four-colour inkjet printing tends to produce.

Every print is produced at over 350 dpi, so the intricate geometric detailing across the lovers' robes stays crisp and legible even up close. We print on 200 gsm FSC-certified paper with a smooth matte finish, keeping glare off that glowing gold surface and colour accurate under any light. It is a museum-quality fine art print made with genuinely eco-conscious materials, offered in a range of sizes to suit any wall or frame.
