Drawing With Scissors: Painted in Colour, Built in Paper 🎨
Some paintings are finished the moment the brush lifts. Others are fought for, rearranged, and rebuilt again and again until every last plane of colour earns its place. Henri Matisse's Large Reclining Nude is very much the latter: a work refined across six gruelling months and twenty-two documented states before the artist was satisfied.
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) trained originally for the law, only turning to painting while recovering from appendicitis, when his mother gave him a box of paints to pass the time. It proved to be a rather significant diversion. By 1905, Matisse was leading the Fauves, a group of painters so notorious for their violently unnatural colour that a horrified critic dubbed them "wild beasts", a name the movement wore with pride ever after.
Matisse spent the rest of his career chasing colour as a language in its own right, a pursuit that reached its purest form late in life. Following major surgery in 1941 left him largely confined to a wheelchair, he began cutting directly into painted paper with scissors, famously describing the technique as "drawing with scissors". Large Reclining Nude was painted in 1935, several years before that final chapter, yet it already shows Matisse feeling his way toward it: he built the composition not purely with brush and pigment, but by pinning cut paper shapes onto the canvas and shifting them until the rhythm felt right, a working method he meticulously recorded in a series of twenty-two photographs charting the painting's evolution. It is a rare, fascinating glimpse into a masterpiece being solved in real time.
