Henri Matisse (1869–1954), the foundational pillar of Modern art, spent his final years proving that creativity triumphs over constraint. Following a serious operation in 1941, he became largely bedridden, unable to work easily in traditional oil painting. This physical limitation, however, spurred his most inventive chapter: the papiers découpés, or cut-outs.

Confined to his bed or chair, Matisse began to cut shapes from paper that had been pre-painted by his assistants with glorious gouache. As he famously said, he was "drawing directly in colour," achieving a perfect synthesis between his lifelong fascination with intense colour fields (a legacy of his Fauvism period) and his mastery of the expressive line.

The Swimmer in the Tank is celebrated as Plate XII from the illustrated book and portfolio, Jazz, published in 1947. The title itself suggests a connection between the rhythmic, spontaneous nature of music and his visually improvisational cut-out technique. The entire portfolio is a fantastical collection of images inspired by childhood memories, the circus, and travel.
