Falling From Grace: The Boy Who Flew Too Close to the Sun

You know the myth. Daedalus, the master craftsman, builds wings of feathers and wax so that he and his son Icarus might escape imprisonment on Crete. Icarus, drunk on the thrill of flight, ignores his father's warning and soars ever higher, until the sun melts the wax and sends him plummeting into the sea. It is one of antiquity's great cautionary tales about hubris, ambition and the fragility of youth.

Draper, however, is not interested in the flight itself. Where his contemporary Frederic Leighton had painted Icarus mid-preparation, wings still intact and future still golden, Draper chooses the aftermath: the boy's body washed onto rock, his bronzed skin still bearing the scorch of his proximity to the sun, cradled by a trio of grieving sea nymphs. It is a scene of epic failure rendered achingly, gorgeously beautiful, moralising, sentimental and unmistakably sensual all at once. 🎨

The great feathered wings, based on the plumage of the bird-of-paradise, spill across the canvas in warm ochres and burnished reds. Draper worked in liquid, almost molten light effects without ever sacrificing form, and the dying rays of a setting sun catch distant cliffs in the background, a quiet, devastating reminder of how quickly a golden moment passes. The composition itself was built figure by figure, a technique borrowed from Leighton, using four professional models of the day: Ethel Gurden, Ethel Warwick, Florence Bird and Luigi di Luca, each painted separately and then woven into one unified, mournful tableau.
