Utagawa Kunisada, one of the most prolific and commercially successful print designers of his era, took charge of the dramatic actor portrait dominating the foreground, a kabuki performer frozen mid-role, his expression taut with theatrical intensity. Meanwhile, Utagawa Hiroshige, the artist we more commonly associate with tranquil landscapes and rain-soaked bridges, was responsible for the delicate cartouches above: a glimpse of a garden, and an exquisitely rendered still life of the restaurant's signature dishes. 🍣

It's worth pausing on how unusual this pairing really is. Kunisada and Hiroshige were both towering figures of the Utagawa school, yet they rarely shared a single sheet so explicitly.
