A Masterpiece of Flirtation and Fantasy 🌸🎨

The Swing (or L'Escarpolette) is perhaps the most recognisable painting of the Rococo era, and for utterly scandalous reasons. Commissioned by a French aristocrat who specifically requested a portrait of his mistress on a swing with himself hidden below, enjoying a rather risqué view, this painting is a masterclass in erotic subtlety wrapped in pastel perfection.

The composition is utterly enchanting: a young woman in billowing pink silk floats through dappled sunlight, her shoe flying off mid-swing whilst her hidden lover gazes upward from the flowering bushes. Meanwhile, an oblivious older gentleman (possibly her husband) pushes the swing from the shadows. A cheeky cupid statue holds his finger to his lips, as if to say "shh, it's our little secret." It's art history's most elegant "she's literally flying" moment, and the symbolism is absolutely delicious. 

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) remains the undisputed master of Rococo romanticism. A Prix de Rome winner who studied under François Boucher, Fragonard captured pre-revolutionary France at its most luxuriously hedonistic.
