The Verdict of the Crowd: A Masterclass In Academic Painting 🏛️
Completed in 1872, Pollice Verso (Latin for "with a turned thumb") is arguably the defining image of the Roman arena in Western art. Gérôme, the great French academic painter and a formidable figure of 19th-century Orientalism and history painting, stages the moment of judgement itself: a victorious secutor stands over his fallen retiarius opponent, gazing up towards the Vestal Virgins for the verdict that will decide a life. Above the sand and blood, the emperor watches from his box, and beyond him, tens of thousands of spectators blur into a golden haze of collective bloodlust.
What elevates this beyond mere historical illustration is Gérôme's obsessive precision. He based the Colosseum's architecture on accurate archaeological drawings, modelled the gladiators' armour on pieces excavated at Pompeii, and consulted written sources to keep the details faithful to the period. It is worth noting, with a wry smile, that historians later discovered the secutor's armour was in fact anachronistic. Even the most rigorous painters get caught out by history 🏺.
The painting that built an empire on screen 🍿
Here is the detail that never fails to delight in conversation: Pollice Verso is the direct visual ancestor of Ridley Scott's Gladiator. Producers showed Scott a reproduction before he had even read the script, and by his own account, it was the image that hooked him entirely. "That image spoke to me of the Roman Empire in all its glory and wickedness," Scott said. "I knew right then and there I was hooked." Commodus's raised thumb, sparing or condemning Maximus, is Gérôme's gesture translated straight to celluloid. Few 19th-century paintings can claim to have shaped a 21st-century blockbuster quite so directly.
