The legend of Okiku is one of Japan's most enduring ghost stories, retold across centuries in countless forms. A young maidservant breaks one of ten precious Korean plates belonging to her master. The punishment is swift and savage: she is bound and cast into a well, left to die in darkness. But Okiku does not stay silent. Her spirit rises each night, counting the plates one by one, searching eternally for the missing tenth.

By 1795, the tale had woven itself so deeply into Japanese culture that when an unusual worm appeared in old wells across the country, its thin threads giving it the appearance of a bound figure, the people had a name for it at once: the Okiku mushi, the Okiku bug. Novelists wrote her story. Kabuki playwrights staged it. And Hokusai painted her, just once, in a work of such austere, spectral beauty that it stopped its viewers cold.

In the print, there is no well. No blood. No moment of violence. There is only a pale disembodied face, floating above the crumbling walls of a ruined estate, long black hair streaming behind it like ink through water, a thin wisp of breath curling into the indigo night. The horror is in the restraint. The genius is in what Hokusai chose not to show.
