The Father of the Sōsaku-Hanga Movement 🎨
There are images that stop you cold — not because they are loud, or garish, or clamouring for your attention, but precisely because they are not. Kōshirō Onchi's iconic Diving print is one such image. A figure in a black swimsuit cuts diagonally across the picture plane, arms outstretched, legs trailing, caught in the breathless instant between the diving board and the water below. The pale, cloud-streaked ground stretches vast and unhurried beneath her. And then: nothing. Silence. Space. It is, quite simply, one of the most arresting works of Japanese printmaking you will ever encounter.
Born in Tokyo in 1891, Kōshirō Onchi was one of the most radical and quietly revolutionary printmakers the 20th century ever produced. He is widely regarded as the father of sōsaku-hanga — the Japanese "creative print" movement that fundamentally upended centuries of tradition.
To understand just how groundbreaking this was, consider the traditional ukiyo-e system that had dominated Japanese printmaking for centuries. Under that model, an artwork passed through multiple hands: an artist would design it, a specialist carver would cut the woodblock, a printer would apply the ink, and a publisher would distribute the final work. Division of labour was absolute, and the artist's individual vision was inevitably diluted at each stage.
