Painted during 1916 against the backdrop of World War I's mounting hysteria, "Merry-Go-Round" became Gertler's powerful anti-war statement, a mechanistic vision of humanity trapped in endless, futile rotation.

Working obsessively from February to July 1916, Gertler refused to show the painting to anyone, calling it his "large and very unsaleable picture." His dedication was absolute, despite being nearly penniless, he admitted his "heart is in my Merry-Go-Rounds," choosing artistic integrity over commercial viability.
