Stillness in the Storm: A Painter Who Became a Print Legend

Born Ohara Matao in Kanazawa in 1877, Koson trained under the Shijō-style painter Suzuki Kason, from whom he took his artist name. His path shifted when he became a teacher at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and crossed paths with Ernest Fenollosa, the American scholar and collector who saw in Koson's bird studies something the Western art world was hungry for. It was Fenollosa who encouraged him to turn his hand to woodblock printing around 1905, setting in motion a career that would eventually span roughly 500 prints.

Koson would go on to change his name twice more, becoming Shōson and later Hōson as he moved between painting and printmaking and forged his most significant partnership, with the great shin-hanga publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō. Shin-hanga, meaning "new prints", was a movement that took the old ukiyo-e traditions and infused them with a more painterly sense of light and atmosphere, and Koson became one of its defining voices. His genre of choice was kachō-e, bird-and-flower pictures, and within it he found a kind of quiet mastery that few of his contemporaries could match.
