Heaven's Fury: Peter Paul Rubens, the founding father of the Baroque, conjured a tornado of doomed flesh and divine wrath that continues to astonish. 🖼️

Born in 1577 in the city of Siegen, Rubens came into the world at a moment when European art was hungry for transformation. ✨ He would go on to become its most dazzling architect. Trained in Antwerp and later in Italy, where he devoured the great Renaissance masters, Rubens synthesised everything he had learned into something radically new: a style of human movement, flesh, and sensuality that we now call the Baroque. It was he who taught Western painting how bodies tumble, how light crashes, how drama thunders. His influence on Rembrandt, van Dyck, and Delacroix was immense; his legacy endures in every art history degree course taught today.

The Fall of the Damned is perhaps his most apocalyptic achievement. Painted around 1620 and now housed in Munich's Alte Pinakothek, the work depicts the moment of God's final judgement. The archangel Michael, flanked by heavenly forces, casts the guilty and the fallen angels into the abyss. From top to bottom, the canvas becomes a tornado of doomed souls: bodies twisting at impossible angles, faces contorted in terror or buried in shame, the serene light of heaven giving way to the fiery, chthonic darkness of Hell below.

Look closely and the painting reveals its extraordinary storytelling. 🎨 At the lower edges, a monk is being dragged down, gnawed upon by demons, his holy vocation affording him no protection. Above him, a vast female figure is carried on the back of a devil, his serpentine tail coiled around her legs. Everywhere, the fallen angels themselves continue to torment the humans they drag to damnation, wickedness persisting even in the act of collective punishment. It is total moral theatre, painted with the energy of a man who believed in every brushstroke.
