Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) lived in a period of intense cultural and political upheaval. As a Flemish painter, he bore witness to the religious wars of the time and the brutal rule of the Duke of Alba. Yet, despite his profound impact, Bruegel himself remains a mysterious figure. His exact date and place of birth are unknown, adding to the intrigue that surrounds his genius.

This stunning volume from Taschen offers an unprecedented look at Bruegel's work. It meticulously compiles his complete paintings, allowing readers to explore the breadth of his artistic vision. Initially working as a print designer for the publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel created popular series depicting everything from moral vices and virtues to lively peasant festivals and panoramic landscapes. His prints were distributed across Europe, cementing his reputation as a master storyteller.

Later, Bruegel shifted his focus to painting, creating works for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels.
