The Artist Who Started Expressionism and Almost No One Knew It

Gerstl paints himself bare-chested from the waist up, a loose semi-transparent white cloth wrapped around his hips in a manner that unmistakably recalls the perizoma, the loincloth traditionally worn by Christ on the cross. Combined with his rigid, frontal stance, the pose reads less like a conventional self-portrait and more like an act of self-mythologising, casting the young artist as martyr or visionary prophet rather than simply a man in a studio. It is a startling amount of ambition and vulnerability to pack into a single canvas from someone barely out of his teens.

Perhaps the most unforgettable element of the painting is the pale blue-green aura Gerstl paints around his own silhouette, separating him sharply from the agitated dark blue-grey of the background. The effect is almost electric, a halo that feels less like religious light and more like exposed nerve. Paired with his cropped hair, hollow eyes and unflinching direct gaze, the painting refuses to flatter him. His pale skin and visible ribs are rendered with total honesty rather than idealised youth, prioritising raw psychological truth over physical perfection, a decision that feels startlingly modern even now.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Viennese art was dominated by Gustav Klimt and the ornamental elegance of the Vienna Secession. Gerstl wanted none of it. He pursued an uncompromising, almost brutal honesty that placed emotional psychology far above decorative surface beauty, and in doing so, he painted the genuine birth of Austrian Expressionist self-portraiture years before Schiele or Oskar Kokoschka rose to prominence. His work was also shaped by the ideas of Sigmund Freud and Otto Weininger, which were circulating through Vienna's intellectual circles at the time, and he treated the act of self-portraiture as a form of existential self-examination rather than simple documentation. 🎨
