The Orphism Revolution: A Masterpiece of Colour and Form 🌈

Robert Delaunay, the visionary French artist who co-founded the Orphism movement alongside his equally talented wife Sonia Delaunay, created something truly special with this work. Whilst Delaunay rarely turned his attention to the nude figure, preferring instead to explore pure abstraction, Nude Woman Reading represents a fascinating intersection of his colour theories and figurative art.

The painting is one of nine versions Delaunay created on this theme, each exploring how the revolutionary colour principles that defined his abstract works could be applied to the human form. The result? A stunning synthesis of sensuality and geometric harmony that continues to captivate viewers over a century later.

Orphism, or Orphic Cubism as it was sometimes called, emerged in 1912 when the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire coined the term to describe this vibrant offshoot of Cubism. Unlike the muted palette of analytical Cubism, Orphism celebrated pure abstraction and brilliant colour, drawing inspiration from Fauvism and the scientific colour theories of Paul Signac, Charles Henry, and dye chemist Eugène Chevreul.

This movement proved pivotal in the transition from Cubism to pure Abstract art, and Nude Woman Reading perfectly demonstrates why. The oval format echoes and accentuates the soft, leaning curve of the woman's body, whilst the composition creates a rhythmic dance of repeated forms. Notice how the curve of the oval reappears in the lines of her hip and left leg, and how the curvilinear shapes of the body are mirrored in miniature within the patterned cloth on the dressing table.
