The Pioneer of Pure Colour 🏃🎨
Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) stands as one of the most significant figures in early 20th-century art, a visionary who fundamentally transformed how artists approached colour and spatial representation. As the pioneer of Orphism, Delaunay created a revolutionary movement that originated in Cubist geometric abstraction but accorded primacy to colour rather than form.
During the years immediately preceding the First World War, Delaunay made his mark in Paris through his groundbreaking explorations of pure painting. In 1912-1913, his series of Fenêtres and Formes circulaires revealed the possibilities of abstract, non-objective art based on simultaneous colour contrasts.
The Definitive Expression of Movement 🏃
"The Runners" represents the culminating canvas in Delaunay's Les Coureurs sequence, painted in 1930 as the tenth and final exploration of this vital theme. Between 1924 and 1926, Delaunay had painted nine previous oils of varying sizes, progressively distilling the composition into a montage of juxtaposed, geometric shapes in contrasting colours.
As Delaunay wrote about this series: "In these pictures, only colour, without chiaroscuro, forms the life itself of the picture." The work captures a group of runners mid-stride, embodying the intrinsic energy and dynamism of the modern experience through pure colour relationships.
